MCPON Launches Reading List Focused on Sailor Development
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman released“MCPON’s Bookshelf”Sept. 23,a collection of Navy professional resources and recommended books designed to encourage Sailors to keep learning, sharpen their skills and invest in their developmentboth professionally and personally.
For Perryman, learning does not stop with formal Navy training.He believesSailors should understand the references that govern their profession, know their jobs and equipment, and continue looking for opportunities to expand their knowledge throughout their careers.
“Great Sailors never stop learning,” Perryman said. “You learn in the schoolhouse, on thedeckplatesand from the people around you, but you alsohave totake ownership of your own development. Read. Study. Ask questions. Look for ideas that challenge the way you think.That’show you get better at your job, become a betterleaderand continue growing as a person.”
MCPON’s Bookshelf organizes resources around four areas:Reading for Every Sailor, Build Your Craft, Lead People, and Grow Beyond the Uniform.
The list follows a simple path:knowyour profession,masteryour craft,learnto lead people well and neverstopgrowing. It starts with the foundational references every Sailor should know, then moves into resources that can help Sailors sharpen theirexpertise, become betterleadersand continue developing throughout their lives and careers.
The recommended books are intended to expose Sailors to different perspectives and ideas that can contribute to their development; their inclusion does notrepresentan endorsement of every view expressed by the authors.
“My goal isn’t for every Sailor to read the same books,” Perryman said. “It’sto build a habit of learning. Find the resources that make you better at what you do, help you lead people well and challenge you to keep growing. And ifyou’veread something that helped you become better at your job, a betterleaderor a better person, share it. Some of the best lessons we learn come from each other.”
